FEATURED TECH TRANSFER STORY - SCIENTIST'S DRIVE PUTS THE BRAKES ON CANCER , LASKER AWARD
Startup companies embody the entrepreneurial spirit and culture at UC Berkeley
More than 240 startup companies have been founded to commercialize IP rights under license from UC Berkeley. Between 2007 and 2012, these companies raised over $1.3B and 65 raised an average of $13.8 M in private funding. 45% are in the life science sector, 26% are in information technology, 15% are in electronics and hardware, 12% are in cleantech and energy. Startup companies transform the university's basic research into innovative products and entirely new industries. As of 2012, startups licensed from Berkeley received ~$67M in SBIR and STTR funding, combined. The formation of these companies improves our quality of life and economic vitality by creating valuable products and new jobs, as well as paying corporate taxes and purchasing supplies from local industries. This tradition of entrepreneurial excellence at Berkeley has spearheaded the Bay Area's dominance in the information technology and biotechnology industries.
