Bio for Kathleen McCowin
Kathleen McCowin manages the licensing of UCB innovations in alternative energy, IT, medical device, sensor, nanotech, material science, and other leading-edge technologies.
Kathleen has 30 years experience in patent law and both national and international licensing. Immediately before returning to University service in July ’08 as a licensing officer, Kathleen was Intellectual Property Counsel at Proteus Biomedical, a medical device start-up for four years. During the previous four years, Kathleen was Senior Intellectual Property Counsel at Becton Dickinson, where she supported BD’s Clontech, PharMingen and BDIS businesses.
Prior to her corporate positions, Kathleen was Senior Counsel at the law firm of Heller Eherman and Patent Counsel at NASA Ames. From 1988-98, Kathleen served as a Patent Attorney at Lawrence Berkeley & Livermore National Laboratories.
Kathleen started her IP career as Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She has a J.D. from George Mason University, an M.S. in Genetics from George Washington University, and a B.S. in Genetics from UC Berkeley.
Kathleen was a Giles Rich Moot Court Judge for IP law in 2008 and 2009, and an LES Foundation Business Plan Competition Judge in ‘09. She was a speaker on the 2009 NanoBio Conference Licensing Panel, and a guest speaker, Patent Engineering class, UC Berkeley.
